Listening: Songs by Stephen Foster: Volume II

"The Hour for Thee and Me" is a flowery love song -- "When day breaks forth on the dewy lawn", "When perfumes from the closing flowers Are wafted on the lea", and "When night beholds her starry realm" are all hours for the two of them.  Perhaps Housman heard it:

The sloe was lost in flower,
  The April elm was dim;
That was the lover's hour,
  The hour for lies and him.

If thorns are all the bower,
  If north winds freeze the fir,
Why, 'tis another hour,
  The hour for truth and her.

He was queer, too.
