Contempt cocktail

In observance of the old advice to treat a cold with the contempt it deserves, I have switched to the following nightcap, which I developed some years ago.

Mix according to taste & conscience:

Orange juice (in honor of Linus Pauling)
Dark rum
Bitters
Lemon extract
Ice

In university I devised a cure for the common cold: A goodly few splashes of rum in a big glass of hot unfiltered apple cider. It was very effective, either because it made the cold go away or because it made me stop caring I had the cold. It was not, however, compatible with attendance at a late-night winter-term programming class clear across the entire campus from where I lived, yuck.
